The Power of the Nine Dragon Son
In Chinese culture, the number nine (9) is considered to be one of the most powerful and auspicious numbers that exists. Particularly intriguing is the fact that the number nine, multiplied by any other number, still equals a final value of nine. For example, if you multiply 9 x 8, the result is 72. When you separate this number and add them up, it equals 9 (7 +2 = 9).
In Feng Shui, the Dragon King is a divine creature full of Yang Chi, who controls all dragons, sea creatures, the oceans, and the weather. It is known to attract success, luck and good fortune. This dragon is believed to have had nine sons.
The nine sons of the Dragon King are all auspicious in their own way. Those unaware of the existence of the nine sons often think that there is only one dragon, since they are not looking at the slight characteristics that separate each son. The sons are often considered as powerful as their father in the particular attributes they possess.
Let's take a look at each son and their special abilities:
- Qiuniu (囚牛): Qiuniu appears as a normal dragon. He is very talented in art and music, therefore his pictures can often be found on the head of stringed instrument.
- Pulao (蒲牢): Pulao is a small dragon with four limbs. He is often very noisy, therefore, his images are often found on temple bells.
- Suanni ( 狻猊): The dragon’s fifth son looks like a lion. He likes smoke and fire. He is always found standing beside gates or around buddhist statues.
- Fuxi (负屃): Fuxi looks like a reptile and he loves literature and calligraphy. Because of that, people usually put his pictures on tombstones.
