9 Sons of the Dragon

 

The Imperial dragon Is also known to have 9 sons, all of whom have the power to eliminate negativity, and it is also known that each son has different qualities. They are considered as powerful as their father in the particular attributes that they possess. Here is the list of the 9 sons of the dragon and their special abilities.


  1. Bixi (赑屃 / Bìxì) - The eldest son of the Dragon king, also known as the  Dragon Tortoise. A brave and strong dragon is represented at the bottom of pillars to enhance the foundation of the building. He is also known to bring about health, wealth and happiness if presented in your home.
  2. Chiwen (螭吻 / chīwěn) - Chiwen is often often carved standing guard on rooftops, holding the onto the edges of the roof to guard the building. He lives in the sea and thus has the power to control water. Due to his powers, he is often placed on rooftops to protect the buildings from fires.
  3. Pulao (蒲牢/ Púláo) - Known for his loud and powerful roar that could be heard from far reaches of the land. His powers were used to warn others of catastrophes. Usually carved onto bells and drums to enhance the might of the sound. 
  4. Bi'an (狴犴 /Bì'àn) - Known for his fairness and love for justice. With a fearsome appearance similar to a tiger, he is usually placed at the entrances of courts so that fairness and justice can prevail.  
  5. Taotie (饕餮/Tāotiè) - Known for his gluttonous character which signifies abundance and wealth. He is usually carved on tableware such as a bronze food vessel to ensure steady supply of food and cookware. 
  6. Gongfu (蚣蝮)- Known to bring about good luck to those who are close to a body of water as he governs over waters. He is often carved on bridges or pier to protect from water disasters. Place Gongfu on a water feature to enhance your wealth.
  7. Yazi (睚眦 / Yázì) - Yazi is known to have a fiery temper and perpetual fearsome features that is always ready for battle. He is usually seen carved on weapons as it is believed that those who carries Yazi to battle will be triumphant. 
  8. Suanni (狻猊 / Suānní) - A still and calm dragon that invokes wisdom and guidance. He is usually depicted on top of candle holders or incense burners as he likes fire and smoke. 
  9. Qiuniu (囚牛 / Qiúniú) - Known for his love for music and culture, he is commonly seen carved on musical instruments. He can also be seen placed on entrances or doorways as he has the power to protect one’s home.
