Who is Tai Sui 太岁?

Tai Sui, also known as the Grand Duke of Jupiter or Grand Commander of the Year. His role changes yearly and commands all other deities except the Jade Emperor. Tai Sui’s role for the year includes taking charge of general worldly affairs and providing protection. This contradicts popular beliefs that Tai Sui is only a punisher and imposes mishaps upon his subjects.

Man's happiness, health, good fortune and unhappiness are all in his care. With great authority and power, he is a deity whom no one dares to disobey as they fear adversity. This serves as a reminder to avoid misconduct, to take care of one’s health, engage in more compassionate activities, and avoid upsetting Tai Sui so that misfortunes does not happen.

There are 60 Grand Commanders in Taoism and in the Taoist calendar, there are 12 "earthly branches" that rotate according to the five elements. The result is a 60-year cycle. Taoism believes in appointing one Grand Commander each year, each with their own characteristics to rule the 60-year cycle.
