How to Utilize the Feng Shui Colours Effectively?

What is Feng Shui?

To understand how color relates to the way we think and feel we need to understand what Feng Shui is. Feng Shui is a Chinese philosophy about spatial orientation and arrangement and how it can create balance and have an impact on our body, mind and spirit.

 What is Yin and Yang?

It refers to the opposite forces, heaven and earth, explaining how these forces may be interconnected and interdependent. Certain colors are Yin colors and others are Yang colors and by using these colors correctly in your environment, you create a perfect balance of peace and harmony.

Importance of knowing the Yin and Yang colours

By understanding the Feng Shui colours and using them correctly will create harmony and balance energy in your life, bringing health, wealth and happiness. You can also create a room in your house using these colours.

The Yin colors of Feng Shui represent healing and relaxation.

  • Blue
  • Blue is the colour of the sky and ocean, therefore creates a relaxing and soothing environment. It brings you calmness and healing energy. Navy blue represents wisdom and all the other shades of blue represent adventure and the need to explore. The colour blue also represents water hence refrain from painting your ceiling with it as it symbolizes being drowned.

  • Black
  • Black is the most ‘Yin’ out of all the other Feng Shui colors, it is the color of night and deep waters. It adds depth and strength to your living space and holds the energy of protection and power. Since black also represents water, never paint your ceiling with it.  A good place to have this colour is your bedroom but do not overuse it as too much Yin is also not a good thing.

  • Green
  • Green is the color of hope, rebirth, growth and health. It is the wood element and therefore it represents nature. This calming Feng Shui color brings healing vibrations and balance to your body. You can use several shades of this colour in different parts of your house.

  • Purple
  • Feng Shui associates purple with spiritual awareness and mental healing. It should be used in moderation as it is a very ‘yin’ colour. However, it makes an ideal color to be used in a meditation or healing room. Whenever possible, opt for a lighter shade such as lavender.

The Yang colors of Feng Shui represent enthusiasm and positive energy

  • Yellow
  • Yellow represents the sun, which exudes warmth, friendliness and happiness. However, this colour should be used moderately as it is believed to create feelings of anxiety when exposed to it for too long. It is best suited for the family room or the children’s room.

  • Orange
  • In Feng Shui, the colour Orange is believed to increase your concentration and sharpen your creative skills, therefore it is Ideal for your study or office.

  • Red
  • Red is a positive and passionate color representing vibrancy, joy and happiness. It’s also a lucky color for the Chinese, therefore it is very commonly used during the Chinese New Year. However, use this color sparingly in your house because it can bring a state of restlessness. This is a good color for the kitchen but not the living room.

  • White
  • White is the color of purity. It represents confidence, poise and trustworthiness. It’s the most ‘Yang’ Feng Shui color because it’s made up of all the seven colors of light. White is a “safe” Feng Shui color and can be used generously.
