Different Postures, meaning of Buddha & Which is better for your homes

There are many popular Buddha postures that you might have seen, but do you know what are the specific meanings? Let's dive into 4 of the main postures of the Buddhas.

Sitting Buddha

The most common portrayal of the buddha. It represents teaching, meditation & an attempt to reach enlightenment. 'Mudras' which means the hand gestures are essential to differentiate what the different sitting positions means. The 3 main sitting positions include Virasana, Vajrasana, and Pralambanasana.

  • Virasana, the hero's or half lotus pose. The legs are crossed over each other, where each foot is resting on the opposite thigh, with both soles pointing upwards. Great for meditation because of the stableness & for helps in flexibility. This position helps in energising the root chakra, helps the individual feel more rooted.
  • Vajrasana, the adamant posture. The legs are folded over each other with both soles of feet turned upward. 
  • Pralambanasana, the european sitting pose. This depicts the buddha seated upright in a chair.  

 Reclining Buddha

Features the buddha lying on his right side with his head supported by a pillow or his propped hand & elbow. It is the representation of the historical final moments of the Shakyamuni buddha. It has great teaching of Buddhism, taken as a form of encouragement. The peaceful smiling expression symbolises calmness & compassion that comes through enlightenment. 

Standing Buddha

Both feet planted on the ground firmly side by side, which indicates that the Buddha is ready to begin travelling & teaching. It shows the repelling of conflict & in contrast when the Buddha's soles of the feet are facing upward, it shows that it is in the receiving posture during meditation.

 

Walking Buddha

One of the least common postures, features standing where one foot is placed in front of other with the robe shifted to one side. It signifies inner peace & grace. Some of the standing Buddha also wears shoes which demonstrates the journey towards enlightenment has begun. The shoes are stopping him from connecting with the earth, so by removing earthly desires will be needed before reaching enlightenment. 

 

 

The desire of having peace is something every home owners would long for. A Buddha statue is one of the most dependable icons to help bring in peace & harmony. But with so many different types & postures of buddha, it is important to choose the right one with the right placement & this will help with attracting the positive 'chi' into the homes. 

  • Blessing Buddha placed at home entrance

A buddha statue where it is seated with one hand raised will be able to help with protection & overcoming fear. The raised hand acts as a shield to keep any negativity & danger away. Also, it demonstrates one being at peace.

  • Meditating Buddha placed at the altar/somewhere quiet

The Buddha is seen sitting with legs folded, face up & hands lying on lap. Eyes are usually fully or partially closed which depicts him being in deep meditation. Placing the Mediation Buddha in a quiet corner will be ideal for one to sit down to mediate & relax, together with candles or incense sticks to create an aura of serenity. 

  • The Statue of Good Luck, Laughing Buddha can be placed in the East Direction

A Laughing buddha commonly depicts a smiling face & a round big belly. The pot belly is believed to consume all negative energy, a symbol of wealth & prosperity. Can be placed in bedrooms, kitchen or dining areas and best facing the main door. Place facing near the East will strengthen bond & relationships between family, in the South-East direction is believed to increase good fortune. 

  • Buddha Paintings

Buddha paintings helps in creating an aura of peace & calmness wherever it is placed. Great for those who do not have enough space for statues display. Best to hang the Buddha paintings in the living room or near the main entrance.
